I thought about my unit on <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em> or <em>A Raisin in the Sun<\/em>. After a few years though, my focus shifted, and I began taking a skill-based learning approach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, I think about my unit focused on speaking skills or my unit about <a href=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/hands-on-essay-writing-activities\/\">writing an essay<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>After all, my students don&rsquo;t need to know <em>Animal Farm<\/em> for life, but they do need critical thinking skills.<\/strong> They don&rsquo;t need to know <em>Fahrenheit 451<\/em>, but they do need to know how to support their ideas with evidence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this post, I&rsquo;m going to talk about the importance of skill-based learning over novel-focused teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-pin-url=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/skill-based-learning\/?tp_image_id=4773\" data-pin-id=\"Skills-based Learning Pin 1\" data-pin-title=\"Skill-based Learning: The New Way to Plan Your Units\" data-pin-description=\"Worried your students won't be ready to face the real world? Skill-based learning equips students with the flexibility to navigate diverse challenges and opportunities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Lifelong Learning<\/span><\/strong>: By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, skill-based learning prepares students for a lifetime of learning and growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Equity and Inclusion<\/span><\/strong>: Skill-based learning ensures that all students, regardless of background or ability, have access to the tools they need to succeed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A skill-based learning unit will have goals like, &ldquo;Students will be able to identify comma mistakes in writing.&rdquo; Or, they might be something like, &ldquo;Students will be able to synthesize information from multiple sources.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These learning targets focus on what students will be able to do. <strong>Notice that the skills are not limited to ELA classes.<\/strong> Grammar and writing are important for every field. Being able to synthesize information is necessary for any content area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>These learning targets are <em>not<\/em> text-dependent.<\/strong> They don&rsquo;t require students to have mastery over any particular poem or novel. This approach delves into the analysis of themes, characters, and literary devices within a particular novel, aiming to deepen students&rsquo; understanding and appreciation of literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Advantages of Novel-Focused Teaching:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Engagement<\/span><\/strong>: Immersing students in rich literary worlds can spark curiosity, foster empathy, and ignite a passion for reading.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Depth of Analysis<\/span><\/strong>: Novel-focused teaching encourages students to delve deeply into the nuances of a text, honing their critical thinking and analytical skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cultural Exploration<\/span><\/strong>: Through the study of diverse literary works, students gain insights into different cultures, perspectives, and historical contexts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Novel-focused teaching is fun. When we all originally dreamed of being English teachers, it was probably novel-focused teaching that we imagined.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those posters we made in grade school about characters? Novel-focused. Diorama projects about setting? Novel-focused.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When we have students express their opinions of a text, step into a character&rsquo;s shoes in a creative writing prompt, or ask them to illustrate a scene, these are generally novel-focused assessments.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These activities have a place, but they don&rsquo;t always demonstrate skills that can be transferred to another subject matter.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-pin-url=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/skill-based-learning\/?tp_image_id=4775\" data-pin-id=\"Skills-based Learning Pin 3\" data-pin-title=\"Skill-based Learning: The New Way to Plan Your Units\" data-pin-description=\"Not sure if your units are preparing students for the real world? Rather, they should be the tools you use to teach your unit&rsquo;s skills.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take, for example, my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Persepolis-by-Marjane-Satrapi-Whole-Unit-Bundle-Printable-Digital-9083604?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Skills-based%20Learning\"><em>Persepolis <\/em>Unit<\/a>. When I designed this unit, my aim was to teach students how to <a href=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/cerwriting\/\">create claims, use evidence, and support their ideas with reasoning<\/a>. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Persepolis-by-Marjane-Satrapi-Whole-Unit-Bundle-Printable-Digital-9083604?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Skills-based%20Learning\">Persepolis<\/a><\/em> was the text I chose to support teaching these skills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three lessons in the unit (one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Communism-in-Persepolis-by-Marjane-Satrapi-Lesson-Worksheet-Writing-Activity-8606139?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Skills-based%20Learning\">discussing communism in <em>Persepolis<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/2022-Iranian-Protests-Persepolis-by-Marjane-Satrapi-Lesson-Writing-Activity-8645848?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Skills-based%20Learning\">one about the recent riots in Iran<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Propaganda-Education-in-Persepolis-by-Marjane-Satrapi-Lesson-8708345?utm_source=itslitteaching.com&amp;utm_campaign=Skills-based%20Learning\">one about education in <em>Persepolis<\/em><\/a>). With each, students must use their <a href=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/cerwriting\/\">claim, evidence, and reasoning skills<\/a>, but the text gives them something to write about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Skills-based learning doesn&rsquo;t mean you can&rsquo;t read awesome literature or have fun activities. But the skills should come first. The text is how you get students there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to prepare students for the world as best you can, skills-based learning should be your focus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, a balance of this approach and novel-focused teaching is the best way to create an engaging classroom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a student myself, through college, and even into the first few years of my teaching career, I always thought of units in terms of the text they used.
