{"id":5605,"date":"2025-06-08T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-08T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/?p=5605"},"modified":"2025-05-27T19:22:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T23:22:09","slug":"how-to-teach-claim-evidence-reasoning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/how-to-teach-claim-evidence-reasoning\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Teach Claim, Evidence, Reasoning in the English Classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you&rsquo;ve ever felt like your students are tossing out opinions without backing them up&mdash;or writing essays that feel more like rambling journal entries&mdash;then it might be time to teach them the <a href=\"https:\/\/itslitteaching.com\/cerwriting\/\">Claim, Evidence, Reasoning (CER) framework<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the&nbsp;CER process&nbsp;has its roots in the&nbsp;science classroom, English teachers are starting to realize what&nbsp;science teachers&nbsp;have known all along: CER helps students build&nbsp;critical thinking, make evidence-based arguments, and communicate more clearly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In short? It&rsquo;s about teaching students how to think.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In ELA, we ask students to wrestle with&nbsp;important questions, analyze primary sources, and interpret the&nbsp;natural world&nbsp;through literature and nonfiction texts. Students benefit from a visible structure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, you can dive more deeply into the individual parts&ndash;the claim, the evidence, and the reasoning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend teaching and practicing each piece separately before challenging students to put them all together. What&rsquo;s the deeper connection? How does it support their claim? What&nbsp;scientific thinking&nbsp;(or literary interpretation) are they demonstrating?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I also like to teach (or review) conclusion sentences when I teach reasoning since their reasoning should end with one.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, my students often struggled with conclusion sentences more than their reasoning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try modeling with examples. Plus, scaffolds like sentence starters are included in the margins!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>If your students are working on research, you could pose research questions instead of literary ones. <strong>At the&nbsp;beginning of the year, keep the prompts simple. <\/strong>As students grow, let them develop their&nbsp;own questions&nbsp;to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But be sure to offer student supports, especially in the beginning.
